The Power of Fund Raising Events

When people come together to support a cause, something magical happens.

Take the Gormley Gathering for example. It’s an annual cocktail party networking event that raises funds for the Leslie and Irene Dubé Urology Centre of Health. 650 CKOM has been hosting the event since 2011 and it has raised more than $1.2 million for prostate cancer initiatives.

Thanks to the dedication and energy of the people who host and attend this third-party event, patient care at the Hospital is improved.

Our annual Mistletoe Charity Ball is organized in large part by volunteers. This year, we’re celebrating the 30th anniversary. It has become a Christmas tradition for many attendees, kicking off the season of giving.

You can host your own fund raising event, too, and it doesn’t have to be on the scale of the Gormley Gathering. “People shouldn’t feel discouraged from doing anything, big to small,” says Michelle Neufeld, St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation Annual Giving Manager.

“If they want to throw a bake sale and donate $100 or $200, that’s awesome. Maybe there’s a 12-year-old who wants to donate her birthday gifts — that’s third-party fund raising!”

Other easy fund raising event ideas include:

  • Organize a run or walk
  • Host a concert
  • Silent auction (which can also be added to an event you’re already hosting)
  • Ice cream social (ask local companies to donate supplies and charge per scoop)
  • Community garage sale
  • Sports tournaments
  • “Third party events have a huge impact,” Michelle says. “Not only do we get a donation but the people hosting the event also have a broader reach in the community than the Foundation.”

Any fund raising done in 2019 will be going towards our Close to Home Campaign for Hospice and End-of-Life Care. To read more about that campaign, visit closetohome.fund.
